Every summer, we raise meat chickens, or broilers, at Telderer’s Rainbows End Farm. They arrive here when they are just a day old. For the first 2-3 weeks, they are kept safe in our homemade brooder. Once they are old enough, we move them outside into our portable chicken “tractors”. These are moveable pens to protect chickens from predators but also allow them to be pasture raised. The bottom is open so they can scratch, eat grass, catch bugs, and enjoy the outdoors. They have fresh air to breathe and plenty of sunshine to soak up Vitamin D. This is what we mean by pasture raised chickens.
We move these portable pens twice a day so the chickens have a new fresh area to enjoy. They are never lacking for grasses and clovers, and can always find a nice spot to nestle down. After a few weeks, the chickens have established the tractors as their home so we move the tractors during the day and let the chickens wander the fields. At night, they return to tractor to sleep and we shut the door again to protect them from nocturnal predators. You can’t get more free range chicken than this!
Our pasture raised chickens enjoy their lives and get to live out their natural instincts, unlike the chickens raised in conventional factory farms. This is not only a better life for them, but a better product for you! The ability to roam around gives their meat a firmer texture, higher levels of Omega-3s, and a lower fat content.
