Every summer, we raise organically-fed turkeys on pasture here at Telderer’s Rainbows End Farm. The poults arrive when they are just one day old. Young turkeys are vulnerable at that age and susceptible to cold air and drafts so they spend their first 3-4 weeks in a safe, warm brooder.
Next the turkeys go into a portable pen in the pasture. They are able to forage and enjoy all the fresh air and sunshine they’d like while also being protected from predators and the elements in the pen. When they are big enough, the pens are opened during the day to allow the turkeys to roam about the pasture. This exercise gives their meat a firmer texture and lower fat content.
Our pastures are organic and so is the supplemental feed we give our pasture raised turkeys. The meat of organic and pastured turkey is better for your health. It is free of the antibiotics, growth hormones, and chemicals present in conventionally-raised turkeys. Our birds are not injected with a basting solution like the store bought poultry that needs the “broth” to make up for a lack of flavor resulting from poor feed and living conditions. Without this added solution, you’ll notice our turkeys have less shrinkage, so you’re getting more for your buck!
