Icelandic Sheep

We love our Icelandics! Icelandic sheep are a hardy breed. They do well rotational grazing in our pastures and don’t require any grain, which produces healthier pasture-raised meat. The flavor of their meat has been described as gourmet, more tender and mild than commercial breeds. Many of our customers tell us it’s the best lamb that they’ve ever eaten.

Icelandic sheep are also considered a dairy breed, but we don’t utilize their milk. They are good mothers and usually have twins. Their milk production is so good that lambs reach market weight in just 6 months on their mother’s milk.

In addition to delicious meat and milk, Icelandic sheep have premium fleeces. Their wool is dual coated. Thel is the fine, soft undercoat that provides warmth and tog is the longer, coarser outer coat which is water-resistant and provides shelter from harsh weather conditions. Icelandic sheep produce less lanolin than most breeds. For the raw fleece customer, this means the wool loses significantly less weight when washed compared to other sheep breeds. Their wool is extremely versatile and has a wide variety of natural colors.

The wool from our flock is highly valued by hand spinners and has won several awards in the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival’s fleece judging competition. If you’re interested in purchasing our high quality and valued fleeces, please view our slideshow below to find the product code to use in our online store.

You can see why we love our Icelandics! If you love Icelandics too, we also have Icelandic sheep and lamb for sale as breeding stock.

Our purebred Icelandic sheep are from registered breeding stock. Since our primary focus is lamb, we have not registered our animals; however they all could be. Our flock thrives on rotational grazing and ewe’s milk and haven’t been fed grain. This picture shows the amazing growth of Icelandic lambs. This is an April lamb at 4 months of age next to her mom.

We also have listed the breeding record by year of each ewe. If you’re interested in breeding stock, please contact us. We give a 10% discount on purchases of 3 or more.

Icelandic sheep have amazing fleeces. We started entering in the WI Sheep and Wool Festival’s judging and auction in 2013. We were thrilled with the results! As you’ll see in this slideshow, we’ve had many winners and it’s proving hard to choose which ones to enter each year. Those who practice wool arts have told us that our fleeces are wonderful for hand spinning and felting and the fiber takes dyes well.

If you’d like to preorder a fleece, you may put down a deposit and we’ll send you a sample prior to completing the sale. All of our fall fleeces are well skirted. Lamb fleeces sell for $20-$25 per pound, and adult ewe’s sell for $10-$15 per pound. You’ll notice very little loss in weight after washing because Icelandic fleeces contain so little lanolin. In fact, many spinners choose to spin it in the raw because of this quality.

Jori

Jori was one of our original registered ewes. She is also our oldest ewe, born in ’08, who has given us exceptional lambs. She has a nice meaty frame with a black wavy fleece. (Lambing record since 2012- 2,2,2,0,2) If you wish to pre-order Jori’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoJori.

Ella

Ella ’11, also registered, came to us from a farm in MI. She passes on those eye spots to her offspring; see her daughter in the background. All of her lambs also inherit her huge, lustrous, soft fleeces. (Lambing record: 1,2,1,2,2) If you wish to pre-order Ella’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoElla.

Abby

Abby was the third registered ewe that we purchased from MI. She was born in ’11 as well and also has a nice solid build that she passes on to her offspring. (Her lambing record: nb,2,3,1,1) The year she had triplets, we thought another ewe might, but were totally surprised by hers. She never needed assistance from us with birthing or feeding. If you wish to pre-order Abby’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoAbby.

Snow White

Snow White came to us from a farm in WI. She is also registered and born in ’09. Icelandic’s are a triple purpose breed, and Snow White is a very milky ewe. We have not utilized her milk, but her lambs sure grow well. She and her daughter had triplets within a week of each other, and they both raised all of them without assistance from us. (Lambing record: nb,1,2,1,2,3,2) If you wish to pre-order Snow White’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoSnowWhite.

Claire

Claire was another of our original registered ewes. She was born in ’09, and came to us from a farm in WI. This picture doesn’t do her fleece justice, it is coarser because of her age, but has varying shades of grey to it. She has given us a number of beautifully fleeced lambs; unfortunately, most have been rams, two of which received a 2nd and 3rd place ribbon at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. (Lambing record: nb,1,2,1,1,2,2) If you wish to pre-order Claire’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoClaire.

Ebony

Ebony was a twin, and one of the first lambs born on our farm in ’11. She has a very pretty multi-hued fleece with shades of black, grey and brown in it. She also gave us our first set of triplets. (Lambing record: nb,2,3,1+sb,2) If you wish to pre-order Ebony’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoEbony.

Alyssa

Alyssa was born in ’13 as a single to Snow White, out of Ricki. She is a muscular girl with a lovely fleece. Many times Icelandic’s fleece will get coarser as they age, but hers won a 2nd place ribbon in ‘16 and a 3rd place ribbon in ’15 at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. (Lambing record: 2,3,1) If you wish to pre-order Alyssa’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoAlyssa. She is available as breeding stock for $600.

Janie

Janie was a twin, born on our farm in ’13 out of Ebony and Bennie (Claire/Patches). She has a beautiful black undercoat, with a silvery topcoat. Her lamb fleece took 3rd place at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. (Lambing record: 1,2,2) If you wish to pre-order Janie’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoJanie. She is available as breeding stock for $550.

Clarice

Clarice ’15, was a twin out of Claire and Jessie. She has a lustrous light silver fleece. Last year her first lamb Romeo, who is behind her in this photo, took 1st place & Reserve Grand Champion at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. His fleece was a myriad of colors; the woman who purchased it called him a “party poodle”. If you wish to pre-order Clarice’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoClarice.

Cocoa

Cocoa was a twin born in ’14 to our registered ewe Brownie, out of Ricki. She has a very nice moorit fleece which won a 3rd place ribbon in ’14 at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. We kept her Mouflon ram lamb from ’16 for breeding. (Lambing record: 1,2) If you wish to pre-order Cocoa’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoCocoa. She is available as breeding stock for $550.

Gidget

Gidget ’15, was a twin out of Dori & Jessie. First time moms typically have a single, Dori had twins, and Gidget was tiny. So she was not bred her first year. She grew into a nice thick build like her mom and has a gorgeous multi-hued fleece as seen above. If you wish to pre-order Gidget’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoGidget. She is available as breeding stock for $500.

Zelda

Zelda ’13 was a twin out of Ella & Ricki. She took 1st place in her class at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival for her luscious lamb fleece. (Her lambing record: 1,1,2) If you wish to pre-order Zelda’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoZelda.

Bella

Bella ’12 is also out of Ella, she has a deep, thick, reddish brown fleece. (Her lambing record is: 2,2,1,2) If you wish to pre-order Bella’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoBella.

Ezmerelda

Ezmerelda ’14, is out of Zelda & Magnum. This picture doesn’t do her fleece justice. It has a lovely luster to it, and was entered in the WI Sheep & Wool Festival where it took 2nd place & Reserve Grand Champion as a lamb fleece. (Her lambing record is 2,2) If you wish to pre-order Ezmerelda’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoEzmerelda. She is also available for breeding stock for $550.

Jessica

Jessica was a ’15 twin out of Bessie and Larry. She has a thick, soft, shiny black fleece which took 2nd place & won Reserve Grand Champion at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival as a lamb. She is also quite the character with a boat load of personality! She gave us a single in her first year of lambing. If you wish to pre-order Jessica’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoJessica. She is available for breeding stock for $600.

Larissa

Larissa was a twin born in ’14 out of Alyssa and Magnum. She is a big muscular girl like her parents, with a big, beautiful fleece to go with it. (Lambing record: nb, 2) If you wish to pre-order Larissa’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoLarissa. She is available as breeding stock for $600.

Dori

Dori was a twin born in ’14 out of Jori and Magnum. She has a thick, soft, black fleece which won a 4th place ribbon as a lamb at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. (Lambing record: 2,2+sb) If you wish to pre-order Dori’s fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoDori. She is available as breeding stock for $500.

Julya

Julya ’15, was a single out of Abby & Ricki. She has a nice thick build like her mom and a gorgeous multi-hued fleece as seen above. She gave us a single lamb this past year, which is easier for first time moms to handle. If you wish to pre-order Julya’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoJulya. She is available as breeding stock for $550.

Amelia

Amelia was a single out of Alyssa & Patrick in ’16. She has a nice meaty build like her mom, and a huge, soft fleece. She took a 1st place ribbon at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. Stella

You guessed it, Stella is a ’16 twin out of Ella & Jessie. Did the eye spots or that huge, wavy, shimmering fleece give it away? If you wish to pre-order Stella’s fleece, visit our online store and use product code RpoStella. She is available as breeding stock for $550.

Nala

Nala is a ’16 twin out of Bella & Magnum. She has a lovely fleece that took 2nd in its class at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. She is also a sweet girl, like her mom, who will be staying here. However, if you’d like to pre-order her fleece, visit our online store and enter product code RpoNala.

A ram is always an animal that needs to be respected. We have been fortunate with ours; not only have they been beautiful, meaty boys, but big babies as well. Following are pictures of many of our rams. This is Ricki, he will always be one of our favorites.

Magnum

Magnum was purchased from a farm in northern WI in 2013 to broaden our gene pool. He is a registered ram, and a product of AI genetics, direct from Iceland. He came to our farm in the back of our minivan. The stop at the Culvers drive-thru was interesting, to say the least.

Jessie

Jessie was a son of Snow White and Ricki, a wonderful combination of their best qualities.

Patrick

Patrick was a registered ram purchased in 2015 to add different genetics to our flock, and also that lovely mouflon pattern that he passed on.

Frappe

Frappe is a ’16 twin out of Cocoa & Patrick. His lovely fleece took 1st place at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. He will be kept on our farm for breeding.

Dumbo

Dumbo was a ’16 twin out of Jori & Magnum. Another beautiful boy and fleece, his fleece took 4th place at the WI Sheep & Wool Festival. We kept him for breeding this past winter, but will be looking to add new genetics again this fall. So he will be made available for your flock $450.
